On Friday, Congressman David Trone (MD-06) hosted a conversation on making our tax code more fair with Senator Chris Van Hollen (MD) and Sarah Christopherson, the Legislative and Policy Director at Americans for Tax Fairness. During the conversation, the group talked about America's broken tax system and how the Build Back Better Act will take a step toward ensuring that the wealthy and large corporations pay their fair share.

"Our current tax code rewards wealth, not work. That's wrong," said Representative David Trone. "Middle-class Americans should never pay a higher tax rate than billionaires. We must ensure everyone pays their fair share. It's just common-sense."

"Our tax system is currently rigged in favor of the super wealthy and against working families. That needs to change, and the Build Back Better initiative is a big step in the right direction," said Senator Van Hollen. "This bill gives tax cuts to middle- and lower-income families with children and will reduce the costs of everything from child care to many prescription drugs. The costs are fully offset by enacting long-overdue reforms to prevent large corporations from hiding profits overseas and closing loopholes used by the wealthiest of the wealthy to avoid paying taxes. These measures will help us build an economy that works for all Americans."

"Thank you to Congressman Trone and Senator Van Hollen for their strong leadership in fixing our broken tax code and protecting working families in Maryland," said Sarah Christopherson, the Legislative and Policy Director at Americans for Tax Fairness. "Today's event made clear how desperately we need the Build Back Better package."

In 2017, the Republicans in Congress rigged our tax code in favor of the wealthy, while neglecting the middle class. The Build Back Better Act will change that by cutting taxes for millions of Americans while making sure the wealthiest Americans and corporations pay their fair share. The Build Back Better Act will also lower the cost of child care and health care and build a cleaner environment. No one making less than $400,000 will pay a penny more in taxes.

Congressman Trone has always advocated for an increase in corporate and high-income tax rates, as reflected in his editorial "Congress needs to increase my taxes."

Americans for Tax Fairness is a diverse campaign that holds the support of more than 420 national, state and local organizations, all united in support of a fair tax system for all Americans. The primary purpose of Americans for Tax Fairness is to educate the public on the inadequacies of our current tax code in order to influence policymakers to support comprehensive and progressive tax reform.
