Rep. David Trone Hosts Conversation on Reproductive Freedom with CEO of Planned Parenthood Maryland

Press Release

Date: Oct. 14, 2021
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congressman David Trone (MD-06) released a recorded conversation with the CEO of Planned Parenthood Maryland, Karen J. Nelson. During their conversation, the two discussed the Women's Health Protection Act, misconceptions about Planned Parenthood and its services, Texas' new abortion law, and the impact COVID-19 has had on gaining access to preventive services.

"I firmly believe that no Member of Congress should interfere with a woman's ability to make decisions about her own body," said Congressman David Trone. "The decision to end a pregnancy is often the most difficult choice a woman or family could ever make. That's why protecting the rights and choices of women, and all Americans, is incredibly important to me."

"It is important that we do protect abortion access right now," said Karen J. Nelson. "Using the word abortion, talking about abortion, and normalizing it because, guess what, abortion is normal. Abortion should be destigmatized."

In the wake of Texas' new restrictive abortion law, Congress has taken action to protect a woman's right to choose. Trone and fellow House Democrats passed the Women's Health Protection Act last month. The bill would enshrine the protection of Roe v. Wade into law, preventing the Supreme Court from overturning the decades-old abortion ruling.
