Reps. Ted Budd, Patrick Mchenry Announce $21 Million Grant for Iredell-Statesville Schools
Statement
Today, Reps. Ted Budd (R-NC) and Patrick McHenry (R-NC) announced a $21.2 million competitive Department of Education grant for Iredell-Statesville Schools. Both congressmen represent parts of Iredell County.
The federal dollars come from the Department of Education's Teacher and School Leader (TSL) Incentive Grant Program and would allow Iredell-Statesville Schools to implement the STRIVE Program (Supporting Teachers and Redesigning Incentives using Value-added measures of Effectiveness). This initiative would facilitate incentive-based compensation for teachers in high-need schools.
Rep. Budd sent a letter of support for this grant funding on September 27, 2021.
Rep. Budd said in a comment:
"Matching good teachers with high-need schools is one of the most effective ways we can ensure that North Carolina students are unlocking their full potential. I'm proud to have secured this grant so that high quality teachers will be able to receive the pay they deserve, and Iredell-Statesville students will see an improved classroom experience."
Rep. McHenry said in a statement:
"This grant will help ensure Iredell-Statesville schools are supporting their students with high-quality teachers that are motivated by their student's success. I am grateful to all of the teachers, administrators, and staff for their dedication to the important job of preparing our students for success both in the classroom and in our communities."
Grant abstract:
The project will reach 12 high-need schools with free-and reduced-lunch rates over 50% impacting 5,673 students, 474 teachers, 12 principals, 16 assistant principals, 4 content coaches, and 7 instructional facilitators.
The project's vision is to increase student academic achievement and improve equitable access to effective educators in high-need schools.
STRIVE will emphasize evidence-based activities to address the needs of the target population through the intersection and cumulative effect of four core strategies: recruit, prepare/support, lead, and reward.
