Toomey Opposes Democrats' Attempt to Nationalize Elections

Washington, D.C. -- U.S. Senator Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) released the following statement after voting in opposition to the Freedom to Vote Act, which would federalize state election laws and provide federal dollars to fund political campaigns.

"The so-called Freedom to Vote Act--like the similarly misnamed For the People Act--is just the Democrats' latest effort to rebrand their unpopular, unpassable attempt to nationalize elections and achieve long-term job security by tipping the scales of future elections in their favor. This power grab is a flawed, partisan effort to override state election laws and overrule reasonable methods that ensure it's easy to vote and hard to cheat. This so-called election reform isn't for America. It's for the Democrats to keep the majority."

The Freedom to Vote Act recycles many of the same problematic ideas Democrats previously tried to pass in the For the People Act, such as:
· Public financing to eligible House campaigns
· Campaign finance provisions that even the left-leaning ACLU has said would "chill" free speech
· Effective gutting of state voter ID laws for mail-in ballots
· Micromanagement of state voter registration systems, early voting hours, polling site locations, and drop-box availability
