Issues: Labor Unions

Warren, Ohio -- Congressman Tim Ryan (OH-13) today urged Stericycle Inc. management to work with employees to find an outcome that benefits both labor and management. Workers at Stericycle Inc. are excising their right to strike and fight for fairer wages and benefits.

"Your workers deserve a fair union contract. It is my understanding that despite numerous bargaining sessions, labor and management have been unable to reach to an agreement. I am especially concerned about reports in the news media that the company has hired temporary replacements during the strike. Thus, I strongly urge you to do everything within your power to settle these disagreements through the good faith bargaining process. A prolonged dispute will have detrimental consequences for the company, your workforce, and their families," wrote Congressman Tim Ryan.

President and Chief Executive Officer

Stericycle, Inc.

Dear Ms. Miller,

I write on behalf of the workers at Stericycle Inc. to express my concern with the inability to finalize an agreement between labor and management. As you know, these workers are excising their right to strike to fight for fairer wages and benefits. The right to collective bargaining is key to resolving any issue. When workers and management work together as equals great things can be accomplished.

The COVID-19 pandemic has vividly highlighted how much society depends upon essential workers, such as those at Stericycle. Praise for the heroic work being done by workers domestically and worldwide in dangerous, exhausting conditions is everywhere, especially when dealing with the transportation, treatment, and disposal of medical waste. These workers leave their homes to help maintain an appearance of normality for others, at great risk to themselves and their families.

Your workers deserve a fair union contract. It is my understanding that despite numerous bargaining sessions, labor and management have been unable to reach an agreement. I am especially concerned about reports in the news media that the company has hired temporary replacements during the strike. Thus, I strongly urge you to do everything within your power to settle these disagreements through the good faith bargaining process. A prolonged dispute will have detrimental consequences for the company, your workforce, and their families.

As an important and valued member of our business community, I want Stericycle to succeed and grow. The key to labor-management teamwork is cooperation, open dialog, trust, and equity. I strongly urge both sides to work toward an outcome that benefits both the company and the workers. Should you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out to me at your convenience.

Sincerely,

Tim Ryan

Member of Congress
