Schneider Hosts STEAM Scholars at Chicago Botanic Garden

GLENCOE, Ill. -- Congressman Brad Schneider (IL-10) on Saturday hosted the 2021-2022 class of STEAM Scholars at the Chicago Botanic Garden. 20 students from 13 schools across the district joined Schneider to learn about local STEAM opportunities at the Garden.

"Lake and Cook Counties offer incredible opportunities for students to learn about and work in STEAM fields here at home. Our world-class Chicago Botanic Garden is a gorgeous, engaging example of the opportunities our students have, and I was thrilled to take this year's STEAM scholars there on Saturday. STEAM education is critical for preparing our next generation for the jobs of the future. Learning STEAM skills will help our students find creative solutions to problems like climate change, disease research, technology development and more," Schneider said.

Chicago Botanic Garden experts Dr. Andrea Kramer, Dr. Kay Haven, Joan O'Shaughnessy, and Taran Lichtenberger helped lead the students on a tour of the garden. Students learned about different types of prairie as well as Budburst, the Garden's community initiative to help protect the planet and fight climate change.

Students in the STEAM Scholars program will join Schneider on visits to four local STEAM-related businesses and organizations during the course of the program. On these visits, students participate in discussions with local employees, business owners, and educators, and learn more about the STEAM career opportunities in our backyard. In previous classes, students visited Mitsubishi Electric Automation, Clorox Manufacturing, Chicago Executive Airport, the chemistry and photonics labs at College of Lake County, the Lake County Sheriff's Office, and Jessup Manufacturing.
