LaMalfa and U.S. Senators Ask Biden for Major Disaster Declaration

Statement

Date: Aug. 30, 2021
Location: Chico, CA

Congressman Doug LaMalfa (R-Richvale) issued the following statement after Senator Feinstein and Padilla joined him in asking for a major presidential disaster declaration for the fires in Northern California. Earlier today, Governor Newsom finally submitted the required request to the President for aid. Under the Stafford Act only a Governor can request federal aid for a state. LaMalfa, Feinstein and Padilla had been prepared for weeks to assist, and had spoken with the White House about the need for assistance.

Rep. LaMalfa said, "The Dixie Fire is the largest single fire in modern California History. Added with other regional fires there has been a great need for help. I'm happy that this request has finally been submitted. My team and I have been in discussions with the White House and the California Office of Emergency Services in anticipation of the request. With thousands evacuated and over 1,000 homes across Northern California destroyed we need to come together and support our neighbors and help them rebuild. I'm thankful to both of our Senators for joining me in the request for aid, and look forward to the Biden Administration's quick approval."

Congressman Doug LaMalfa is a lifelong farmer representing California's First Congressional District, including Butte, Glenn, Lassen, Modoc, Nevada, Placer, Plumas, Shasta, Sierra, Siskiyou and Tehama Counties.
