Sen. Cramer Receives Classified Briefing on Afghanistan Withdrawal from U.S.-Afghanistan Forces Commander

Statement

Date: Sept. 14, 2021
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Defense

U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer (R-ND), a Senate Armed Services Committee (SASC) member, issued the following statement after he and his SASC colleagues received a classified briefing today on the Afghanistan withdrawal from General Austin Scott Miller, the former Commander of the U.S. Forces in Afghanistan:

"Today's briefing painted a clear contrast between what the Biden Administration wants Americans to believe and the reality on the ground. No matter the spin, this withdrawal was severely flawed and an international embarrassment. Administration officials have repeatedly said a Taliban takeover of Afghanistan was impossible to foresee and military support for the withdrawal as planned was unanimous, but it's increasingly clear the facts do not support these claims. I plan to press Defense Secretary Austin on these issues when he comes before our committee later this month. The American people deserve answers and accountability."
