Congressman Tom Rice today highlighted available rental and utility assistance funds for residents of several counties in the 7th Congressional District who were financially impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

"The COVID-19 pandemic has financially impacted many of our friends and neighbors and some have struggled to make regular rent payments. I encourage these 7th District renters to apply for the SC Stay Plus program for assistance in paying rent, utilities, and moving costs," said Congressman Tom Rice. "There are plenty of federal funds still available for South Carolinians, but they expire at the end of September. People who need help should apply soon so we can get folks back on their feet."

The SC Stay Plus COVID-19 Housing Assistance program can help renters experiencing financial hardships and housing challenges make up to 12 rent and utility payments dating back to March 2020 and 3 future payments. The funds can also help cover moving costs, storage unit fees, and security deposits for those displaced as a result of the pandemic.

7th District renters in the following counties are eligible to apply: Marion, Florence, Darlington, Chesterfield, Dillon, Marlboro, and Georgetown.

To enroll in the program, South Carolinians can call 800-476-0412 or email scstayplus@schousing.com. Additional information about the program and eligibility requirements is available here.

Background:

$272 million was made available to South Carolina by the U.S. Department of the Treasury as part of a $25 billion rental and utility assistance package in the Consolidated Appropriations Act that Congress passed in December 2020. To date, $253 million in funds remain available. South Carolina lawmakers passed, and Governor McMaster signed, a joint resolution (R.26/ H.3770) in April 2021 to outline how the funds should be distributed with a September 30, 2021 deadline.
