Ruiz, Congressional Hispanic Caucus Honored with OHTLI Award by Government of Mexico

Washington, D.C. -- Today, Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) Chair Raul Ruiz, M.D. (CA-36) accepted the Ohtli Award from the Government of Mexico on behalf of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC). The Ohtli Award is the highest honor bestowed by the Government of Mexico to individuals or organizations that have worked to empower the Mexican diaspora and helped to "open the path" for new Mexican American and Hispanic generations. Mexican Ambassador to the United States Esteban Moctezuma awarded Chair Dr. Ruiz at the Mexican Cultural Institute in Washington, D.C.

"On behalf of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC), I humbly accept the Ohtli Award, a tremendous honor and privilege for our Caucus bestowed upon us by the Government of Mexico for our commitment to the advancement of the rights and interests of Hispanic communities, especially during the current pandemic," said Chair Dr. Ruiz. "The Ohtli Award is a significant recognition of the CHC's work as a national and international leader in improving the lives of Hispanic Americans. Since its inception, the CHC has worked to create paths or "ohtlis' for future Mexican American and Hispanic generations. The CHC looks forward to building on our strong relationship with Mexico and continuing to lead in a steadfast manner and give voice to Hispanic communities across the United States."

The Congressional Hispanic Caucus is dedicated to using the legislative process to advance issues affecting Mexican Americans and Hispanics across America.

BACKGROUND

Ohtli is the Nahutl word for "path," implying opening the way forward for others. Since 1996, the Government of Mexico has given the award to individuals or organizations for their diplomatic work to assist the Mexican diaspora and promote Mexican American or Hispanic culture.

Recipients receive a medallion, silver rosette, and a diploma.
