Statement of Congressman Rob Wittman on the Suicide Bombing at Hamid Karzai International Airport

Statement

Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Defense

Today, Congressman Rob Wittman (VA-01) issued the following statement in response to a suicide bombing that killed a number of U.S. service members and Afghan citizens at the Hamid Karzai International Airport on Thursday, August 26th:

"Earlier today, the United States lost a number of our Marines who were serving in Afghanistan. For some, it is easy to view this solely as a significant geopolitical event. But we must remember that for each of these Marines, parents will be left without a child. Spouses will be left without a husband or wife. Children will be left without a mother or father. The nation weeps for this loss.

"This tragedy is not without cause or consequences. The blood of those slain and wounded today is on the hands of President Biden. He disgracefully accepted that some Americans may not be evacuated. He is acquiescing to the Taliban imposed deadline. Now, terrorists know this President is too weak to defend American citizens and rescue the Afghans who helped us. Due to Joe Biden's failed leadership, every terrorist organization in the world is now emboldened to carry out attacks against American citizens.

"The United States' international standing sinks lower and lower with each passing day of this debacle. President Biden's dereliction of duty leads the American public, and the world at large, to ask the question: if President Biden is not willing to stand up for the lives and safety of American citizens and servicemen, then what will he stand up for?"
Congressman Rob Wittman represents the First District of Virginia. He serves on the House Natural Resources Committee and the House Armed Services Committee, where he serves as the ranking member of the Seapower and Projection Forces Subcommittee.
