Maloney Announces Arrival of Second Child Tax Credit Payment

Statement

Location: Washington, DC

Newburgh, NY -- Today, Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (NY-18) released the following statement following the delivery of the second round of Child Tax Credit payments on Friday, August 13. In March, Rep. Maloney voted to pass the American Rescue Plan to authorize this historic tax cut to help the Hudson Valley rebuild its economy and get hardworking families back on their feet.

"This historic tax cut is more than just a monthly check. It's helping parents put gas in the car, food on the table, and make ends meet," said Rep. Maloney. "My top priority is supporting working families as we continue our fight against COVID-19, and we're getting it done through the Child Tax Credit -- the most significant anti-poverty, family support initiative in American history."

"The first payment came right on time. My husband caught a flat tire that week and my children needed an updated wardrobe and supplies for school. Without support from the Child Tax Credit, it would have been difficult to afford these expenses," said Terri Kitai, a soon-to-be mother of three. "I'm thankful to Congressman Maloney for fighting for these monthly payments and supporting families like mine."

"Since the start of the pandemic, I haven't been able to work full-time because I've struggled to find child care," said Jill Allen, a mother of a rising kindergartner. "Now that my son is starting school, I hope to return to work full-time. Thank you, Congressman Maloney, for working on behalf of single mothers, like myself, who will use these monthly payments for food and other necessities."

This tax cut for working families put a total of $1 billion into New York's local economy and over $800 million into families' pockets, benefiting over 3.2 million children in July. A new study from the Joint Economic Committee estimates that, based on the July payments, the Child Tax Credit will continue to pump $18.6 billion into local economies each month.

Payments are automatic for families that filed their 2020 returns by May 17. If you did not file your 2019 or 2020 taxes but believe you would qualify for this credit, you can submit your information through the IRS Child Tax Credit Non-filer Sign-up Tool today. If parents wish to opt out of the third payment to receive the full credit after they file their 2021 income tax return, they must do so by August 30 on the IRS Child Tax Credit Update Portal.

Rep. Maloney encourages qualifying parents who have not received their payment to complete this form, so a member of his staff can get to work for them.
