WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, Congressman Blaine Luetkemeyer (MO-03) released the following statement regarding the death of Wentzville native, Marine Lance Corporal Jared Schmitz who was killed in the attacks at the Kabul airport.

"Losing a child is the absolute worst thing that can happen in life. We recently learned that two parents in the Third District are now experiencing that unbearable pain after their son, Lance Corporal Jared Schmitz was killed in the attacks at the Kabul airport on Thursday. Jared was only 20 years old. I spoke to his father today and offered my deepest condolences. Jackie and I are heartbroken for their family and every family who has had to experience such horrible loss.

"Over the last two decades, thousands of Americans have served in Afghanistan and across the Middle East. They did it out of love for this country and to protect all of us. Sadly, we've lost far too many. Yesterday, Lance Corporal Schmitz died while helping Americans escape one of the most dangerous places on earth, and because of his death thousands of people will live. Countless Americans get to see their sons, daughters, mothers, fathers, and loved ones again because Jared exhibited a bravery most people aren't capable of. His life and the lives of every soldier we've lost in war will never be forgotten. He will always be a hero and live in the hearts of so many for eternity."
