Quigley Statement on Supreme Court Inaction Allowing Texas 6-Week Abortion Ban to Take Effect

Statement

Date: Sept. 1, 2021
Issues: Abortion

Today, U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (IL-05) released the following statement regarding the Supreme Court's failure to enjoin Texas' six-week abortion ban (S.B. 8), allowing the law to take effect:

"The Supreme Court's refusal to act has led to the implementation of one of the most draconian abortion bans since Roe v. Wade established that women have the right to choose whether to terminate a pregnancy. Simply put--the Supreme Court has enabled the greatest assault on women's rights in decades.

"S.B. 8 strips women of their reproductive rights and puts the health of Texas women at risk by effectively banning abortions after 6-weeks, before most women even know they are pregnant. This oppressive legislation not only punishes women for their health care choices but also health care professionals for providing care, family or friends for offering support, and even total strangers with no connection to the woman whatsoever.

"Reproductive freedom is non-negotiable. It is clear that if the Supreme Court will not protect abortion rights, Congress must act. We must pass the Women's Health Protection Act to protect the right to access abortion for women across the nation. I am dedicated to fighting to ensure that no woman's health care choices are interfered with by extremist anti-choice ideology."
