Press Release: Vela Announces $700K Awarded to City of Brownsville for Cannery Public Market

Today, Congressman Filemon Vela (D-TX) announced that the U.S Economic Development Administration (EDA) has awarded $700,000 to the City of Brownsville to fund the Cannery Public Market project.

These federal funds will support the renovation of the existing 8,300 square foot Gutierrez warehouse into the Cannery Public Market located in the Mitte Cultural District in Brownsville, Texas. This multi-purpose building will be the new home for the Brownsville Farmer's Market and promote healthy education initiatives for families.

"This is excellent news for the City of Brownsville, which has worked to bring this project to the community and will greatly benefit children and families," said Congressman Filemon Vela. "The Cannery Public Market project has been a vision of the city's for the last several years and I have been proud to offer my support in order to bring their vision to life. I am pleased that the Economic Development Administration is supporting this project, which will create a new home for the Brownsville Farmer's Market and offer residents a new place for our community to gather and have access to local, healthy and nutritious food options."
