FLINT--Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05), Chief Deputy Whip of the House Democratic Caucus, issued the following statement today after the terrorist attack outside of Hamid Karzai International Airport:
"My heart goes out to the families of the U.S. servicemembers killed and injured in today's terrorist attack in Afghanistan. We also mourn the loss of innocent Afghan civilians.

"In recent days, American servicemembers and our allies have airlifted 100,000 citizens from Afghanistan in an unprecedented, dangerous and courageous mission. Our men and women in uniform are risking their own lives to save others and have demonstrated courage and resolve in their mission.

"I remain deeply concerned about the security and humanitarian situation in Afghanistan. I have attended classified briefings by the Secretary of Defense and other senior Biden administration officials, and I urge the president to continue keeping Congress informed as the U.S. government works to evacuate the remaining Americans in Afghanistan.

"As a co-equal branch of government tasked with oversight of the Executive Branch, Congress has a role in examining our exit strategy from Afghanistan. But right now, the U.S. military and intelligence officials must be allowed to complete the mission at hand--getting U.S. citizens and our Afghan allies out as quickly and safely as possible."
