Rep. Williams' Statement on Afghanistan Withdrawal

Statement

Date: Aug. 31, 2021
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Roger Williams (TX-25) issued the following statement following the withdrawal of U.S. troops out of Afghanistan:

"Last night under the cover of darkness, the last American troops departed Afghanistan after nearly 20 years. Five U.S. Air Force C-17's marked the end of a herculean mission directed by President Joe Biden, one that would claim the lives of 13 Marines, Soldiers, and Navy Corpsman. While military operations may have ended, the war goes on for hundreds of American citizens that the Commander in Chief left behind. The country that we vowed would never again become a safe haven for terrorists after 9/11 is now under the control of Islamic radicals, with the Taliban leading the country and ISIS-K becoming more emboldened. We must hold President Biden and every one of his officials that advised on this disgraceful display of cowardice accountable.

My heart is heavy as I reflect on the tremendous sacrifice that our armed forces made over two decades. I'm particularly keeping in my prayers the Gold Star Families whose lives were forever changed as a result, and the Veterans who answered the call to arms, doing all that was asked of them." -- Congressman Williams
