Bishop Votes Against Democrats' Reckless Spending and Federal Election Power Grabs

Washington, D.C. -- Today, Rep. Dan Bishop (NC-09) voted against H.R. 4, the John Lewis Voting Rights Act of 2021, which federalizes America's elections in an unconstitutional manner, and the Democrats' $3.5 trillion socialist budget reconciliation bill.

"Once again, Democrats' contempt for the American people is on full display. Speaker Pelosi called Members back to Washington not to tackle the inflation crisis, the border crisis, or the crisis in Afghanistan. Instead, she brought Members back to Washington to tax and spend our country into ruin," said Rep. Dan Bishop.

"One thing is clear -- this legislation will not serve the American people, rather it will only further solidify Speaker Pelosi's power. The Democrats' $3.5 trillion socialist spending spree, combined with their additional spending plans, will add approximately $40,000 in new federal debt for every American family. It's no surprise that Democrats used procedural gimmicks to shield their own members from having to actually vote for this reckless giveaway to liberal special interests. In addition to the spending spree, Democrats pushed through a cynical, unconstitutional bill to federalize elections and cement their power. It is long past time for Democrats to be held accountable for their shameless power grabs and their reckless obsession with forcing socialism on the American people."

H.R. 4, the John Lewis Voting Rights Act is an unconstitutional power grab that will reinstate federal pre-clearance requirements on state election laws, including voter ID laws. The legislation will allow the Biden administration to take control of state and local elections and ensure the COVID-era voting rules remain in place for good.

Moreover, Democrats' pending $3.5 trillion budget reconciliation will radically initiate a permanently elevated federal spending level, usher in the Green New Deal, and raise taxes on 60 percent of all Americans, including those earning less than $400,000 annually, violating President Biden's promise to the middle class. Democrats used an obscure procedure known as "deem and pass" to advance the legislation containing this left-wing agenda without an actual vote on the budget. Make no mistake, these bills are nothing more than a Trojan Horse for Democrats' socialist agenda.
