DelBene Statement on Continued U.S. Northern Border Closure

Statement

Date: Aug. 20, 2021
Location: Kirkland, WA

Today, Congresswoman Suzan DelBene (WA-01) released the following statement after the United States extended land and water travel restrictions from Canada through September 21, 2021.

"The United States' decision to extend the northern border closure by another month is wrong and misguided. Over the past year and a half, we have asked our border communities to put their economies and lives on hold to combat this virus. Asking them to wait another month is a lifetime for them. Why can fully vaccinated Canadians fly into the United States but not drive over the border?

"The Biden administration needs to make reopening the Canada-U.S. border a top priority to provide relief to border communities. It should take immediate action to reopen the Boundary Bay Border Crossing in Point Roberts and provide a clear timeline for the reopening of the rest of the border. These communities cannot wait anymore."

On August 9, 2021, Canada began allowing fully vaccinated Americans to cross the land border. The United States did not take reciprocal actions, putting communities and economies along the entire Canada-U.S. border at a significant disadvantage.
