Larson, Pascrell React to OIG Report Showing Alarming Mail Backlog at the Social Security Administration

Today, House Ways and Means Social Security Subcommittee Chairman John B. Larson (CT-01) and House Ways and Means Oversight Committee Chairman Bill Pascrell (NJ-09) reacted to the alarming report from the Social Security Administration Office of the Inspector General revealing a significant backlog of unprocessed mail at the Social Security Administration during the COVID-19 pandemic:

"The Inspector General's report is deeply disturbing. Under the so-called leadership of fired Commissioner Andrew Saul, during the pandemic the Social Security Administration failed badly at processing mail. This scathing report details numerous deficiencies found at the Social Security Administration, including one field office with 677 unprocessed benefit applications dated as early as June 2020 and another office with over 9,000 unprocessed applications for new or replacement Social Security cards as of May 2021. Thankfully, President Biden showed Saul the door and Saul cannot continue his destruction of this cherished program. We will continue to look into this matter and look forward to discussing how the SSA will address the backlog moving forward."
