Press Release

Date: July 19, 2021
Location: Albany, NY

Congressman Paul D. Tonko cheered the announcement today at the GlobalFoundries facility in Malta of plans to build a second semiconductor fabrication in the Capital District. Tonko joined U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo and Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer for the announcement, which is expected to create 1,000 new jobs in the region and strengthen critical supply chains that have fallen short of domestic manufacturing needs since the earliest days of the pandemic.

"Today's announcement that GlobalFoundries will expand operations through the establishment of a second fab in our Capital Region reflects the strength of our high-tech workforce and shows that our nation is ready to intensify its production of critical supplies for businesses and consumers across the country while creating jobs and prosperity for Capital Region workers and families," Congressman Tonko said. "Secretary Raimondo's involvement in this announcement shows that the Administration has taken seriously my months-long push alongside my New York colleagues to ensure action is taken to help propel a new, cutting-edge future of American manufacturing. These bold investments by GlobalFoundries will not only help bring thousands of good jobs, they also further position our unparalleled manufacturing workforce to deliver on an urgent need to rebuild America's supply chains. My heartfelt congratulations to GlobalFoundries for all of the visionary work that has gone into today's welcome announcement."

Earlier this year, Tonko partnered with several of his NY colleagues in bipartisan fashion to call on the Biden Administration to invest in U.S. semiconductor production by funding provisions in the Creating Helpful Incentives to Produce Semiconductors (CHIPS) for America Act.
