Date: July 16, 2021
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Immigration

Today, a federal judge in Texas issued a ruling that Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), the Obama-era program protecting certain undocumented immigrants from deportation, is illegal and blocking new applications. U.S. Representative Lucille Roybal-Allard (CA-40), the original co-author of the DREAM Act and the Member of Congress representing the highest number of DACA-eligible youth, issued the following statement:

"Today, a Texas judge tragically struck down the DACA program, ordering the Biden Administration to halt approvals of new DACA applications. As the Member of Congress representing the highest number of DACA-eligible youth and as the original co-author of the DREAM Act, my heart shatters at this terrible news. It pains me that the livelihoods of Dreamers who contribute so much to our communities and nation, including during the COVID-19 pandemic, are once again in limbo. This decision reemphasizes the dire need for the Senate to pass H.R. 6, my Dream and Promise Act. And I urge the Senate to do so as quickly as possible to protect our Dreamers and provide them with a pathway to citizenship."
