As Gun Violence Prevention Month Comes to a Close, Markey Announces Host of Gun Safety Bills to Put an End to Public Health Epidemic

Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) delivered on "Gun Violence Prevention Month" by announcing a number of gun safety bills throughout June. The legislation focuses on strengthening state-by-state gun regulations, putting an end to 3D printing of firearms and the distribution of ghost guns, and increasing accountability for gun dealers.

"We need to ensure that no child walks the streets of their neighborhood or the halls of their school in fear for their life," said Senator Markey. "Congress has the power to put an end to the public health epidemic of gun violence and pass bold, effective, and commonsense gun safety legislation that will save lives all across our country. Although Gun Violence Prevention Month is coming to a close, our fight cannot stop here. We cannot allow more lives to be lost due to government inaction on gun violence prevention."

Senator Markey's gun safety legislation announced during Gun Violence Prevention Month includes:

The Making America Safe and Secure (MASS) Act, legislation with Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Representative Ayanna Pressley (MA-07) that incentivizes states to adopt gun-licensing standards similar to those proven effective in Massachusetts. Massachusetts has comprehensive gun licensing laws and the lowest gun death rate in the nation.
The 3D Printed Gun Safety Act, legislation with Senator Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) and Representative Ted Deutch (FL-22) to prohibit the online distribution of blueprints and instructions that allow for the three dimensional (3D) printing of firearms. This legislation will make it illegal to distribute online digital files that can automatically program a 3D printer to produce or complete the manufacture of a firearm.
The Keeping Gun Dealers Honest Act, legislation with Representative Jim Langevin (RI-02) that would strengthen accountability measures for irresponsible gun dealers and provide the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) with additional resources for enforcement.
The Untraceable Firearms Act, legislation with Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn) and Representative David Cicilline (RI-01) that would permanently include the core building blocks of "ghost" guns-- unfinished frames and receivers --in the definition of "firearm" under federal law. In doing so, online and other gun kit manufacturers and distributors selling frames and receivers that can "readily" be converted into fully functional components would be required to comply with the same federal regulations that govern the production and distribution of completed firearms.
