Washington, D.C. -- Today, Rep. Annie Kuster (NH-02), a Member of the House Agriculture Nutrition Subcommittee, participated in a hearing entitled, "Examining the SNAP Benefit Cliff." During the hearing, Kuster questioned experts about the current federal oversight of SNAP benefit cut-offs and steps Congress can take to support families as they transition off food assistance.

"SNAP benefits were a critical resource for millions of families who suddenly lost their jobs or had hours cut when our economy slowed down last year," said Rep. Kuster. "As our economy reopens and businesses start hiring again, it's vital we help families on SNAP avoid the "benefit cliff' as their wages and hours modestly rise. Thankfully, New Hampshire and the majority of states have instituted Broad-Based Categorical Eligibility (BBCE), a policy that allows families just getting by to continue receiving SNAP benefits at a gradually reduced rate as their incomes rise and stabilize. We must ensure states have full flexibility to use this policy to support families transitioning off food assistance so they can thrive."

Rep. Kuster has been a leading voice in Congress for addressing food insecurity in the United States. Earlier this year, Kuster held a virtual meeting with New Hampshire food producers and distributors to discuss the challenges and opportunities in developing a sustainable, resilient local food system, and how Congress can support their work during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
