Rep. Kirkpatrick Responds to Supreme Court Ruling on AZ Voting Restrictions

(Tucson, AZ) -- Today, Rep. Kirkpatrick released the following statement in response to the Supreme Court's decision to uphold voting restrictions in Arizona. Today's decision signals that challenges to new state laws making it harder to vote would face a hostile reception from a majority of the justices. The vote was 6 to 3.

"Voting is the most fundamental right we have as Americans and discrimination to that right threatens the strength of our democracy. This ruling is alarming and could set a precedent of more partisan politics bleeding into the independent ballot access and electoral process. We should all want more people to vote, not less. The fact of the matter is that these voting rules directly disadvantage AZ voters of color-- and they were designed to do so. Today's decision highlights the importance of passing the For the People Act to set uniform national standards for voting practices and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to prevent future discrimination. After all, voting access attacks come from people that are afraid of your vote, your voice," said Rep. Kirkpatrick.
