WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, House Republican Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) issued the following statement after 32 out of 33 Democrats on the House Appropriations Committee voted to eliminate Hyde Amendment protections, thereby allowing taxpayer dollars to fund abortions.

"After nearly 45 years of bipartisan agreement on the Hyde Amendment, Speaker Pelosi's extremist Democrat allies followed the radical position of President Biden by voting to eliminate Hyde Amendment protections in the Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Appropriations bill.

"For nearly five decades, the Hyde Amendment has enjoyed strong bipartisan support in protecting taxpayer dollars from being used to fund abortions. Hyde protections have saved more than 2 million unborn lives from the horrors of abortion. This is one of the most impactful pro-life policies ever enacted by Congress.

"I remain committed, along with all my fellow House Republicans, to continue fighting with every tool we have to ensure that the Hyde Amendment remains in place. Earlier this year, more than 200 of my Republican colleagues signed a letter pledging our strong opposition to any appropriations bill that eliminates these pro-life protections. Just two weeks ago, I went to the House Floor requesting Unanimous Consent to vote on H.R. 18, the No Taxpayer Funding of Abortion Act which would codify the Hyde Amendment into permanent law. Speaker Pelosi continues to block any debate on legislation that would protect taxpayer money from funding abortions.

"When House Republicans take the majority, we will ensure that the No Taxpayer Funding of Abortion Act is passed and that the Hyde Amendment will no longer be under threat from President Biden and radical Democrats."
