Location: Washington, DC

Today, U.S. Representative Brenda L. Lawrence (MI-14) praised President Biden for approving the State of Michigan's request for a presidential disaster declaration following the historic flooding in Southeast Michigan. According to the White House, the President's action makes federal funding available to affected individuals in the counties of Wayne and Washtenaw. Assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses, and other programs to help individuals and business owners recover from the effects of the disaster. Federal funding is also available on a cost-sharing basis for hazard mitigation measures statewide.

"I'm grateful for President Biden's life-saving, quick action to approve the State of Michigan's presidential disaster declaration request. I've met with families and toured communities devastated by the flooding, and this assistance will go a long way to helping Michiganders rebuild and recover," said Rep. Lawrence. "I will continue to work with our local, state, and federal officials to ensure our communities get the relief and resources they need."

Residents and business owners who sustained losses in the designated counties can begin applying for assistance by registering online at http://www.DisasterAssistance.gov or by calling 1-800-621-FEMA(3362) or 1-800-462-7585 (TTY) for the hearing and speech impaired. The toll-free telephone numbers will operate from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. (local time) seven days a week until further notice.

On Friday, July 2nd, U.S. Rep. Lawrence toured communities and met with families affected by the flooding. She visited Harper Woods, Grosse Pointe City, Grosse Pointe Park, Jefferson Chalmers, and Hamtramck.
