Ryan, DeLauro Statement on Capitol Police Funding

Statement

Date: July 9, 2021
Location: Washington, DC

House Appropriations Legislative Branch Subcommittee Chairman Tim Ryan (D-OH-13) and House Appropriations Committee Chair Rosa DeLauro (D-CT-03) released the following statement on the urgent need for Senate action to fund the Capitol Police:

"The brutal attacks on law enforcement during the January 6 insurrection left physical scars and mental trauma on the men and women of our Capitol Police. It is imperative that we honor their service and protect our democracy with the funding and resources they need.

"Unfortunately, increased security needs since January 6 combined with attrition from the force have caused a significant increase in overtime costs that will exhaust the Capitol Police's salaries account next month. At that point, the department will be forced into an unacceptable choice: furloughing officers or forgoing the services, like mental health and wellness support, that officers need.

"Fortunately, the House has taken action to avert this choice by passing the Emergency Security Supplemental to Respond to January 6th. This legislation covers overtime pay, provides retention bonuses, and expands wellness and trauma support for these heroes.

"The solution lies in the Senate. It is time for the Senate to come to the table, honor the sacrifice of the Capitol Police, and swiftly pass the emergency supplemental."
