Congressman Tim Ryan Votes to Establish a Bipartisan Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Insurrection

Congressman Tim Ryan (OH-13), Chair of the House Appropriations Legislative Branch Subcommittee, voted to establish a bipartisan Select Committee to investigate the January 6th attack on the United States Capitol (H. Res. 503). The bipartisan Select Committee will be comprised of 13 Members of Congress, five of whom shall be appointed after consultation with Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy.

On May 19, the House passed legislation to establish a nonpartisan commission to investigate the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol (H.R. 2333) -- with an overwhelming majority (252-175) including 35 Republicans who defied their party leadership to vote in favor of the bill. However, Senate Republicans blocked the outside commission at the personal request of Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.

"None of us can, or should, forget the events of January 6th and the attempted ransacking of our representative democracy. It cannot be conveniently overlooked for political purposes. This violent insurrection resulted in multiple deaths and the injury of more than 140 law enforcement officers who bravely fought to protect the United States Capitol," said Congressman Ryan. "I am extremely disappointed that Senate Republicans blocked our first attempt to form a nonpartisan national commission like we did following 9/11. We have big challenges facing our country, and I believe Democrats and Republicans can join together and solve those challenges -- but only if we're starting from the same set of facts. It is my sincere hope that this bipartisan Select Committee will help us establish a common foundation that we can build upon in Congress as we work together to heal this country and move forward."

The bipartisan Select Committee will be charged with investigating and reporting on the facts, circumstances, and causes relating to the January 6 domestic terrorist attack on the U.S. Capitol Complex -- including the organization and execution of the attack, law enforcement and military preparation for and response to the attack, and other factors.

Upon concluding the investigation, the Select Committee will issue a final report to Congress with findings, results and legislative recommendations.
