Statement by Congressman Kildee on Jan. 6th Insurrection Select Committee

Statement

Date: June 30, 2021
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05), Chief Deputy Whip of the House Democratic Caucus, issued the following statement today after the U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution to establish the Select Committee to investigate the January 6th, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol:
"The January 6th attack was a dark day in our country's history. On that day, hundreds of insurrectionists stormed the U.S. Capitol, seeking to stop the certification of the presidential election. The assault on our country resulted in multiple deaths and injuries to more than 140 police officers. In the months since the attack, it is shameful to see so many Republicans downplay, diminish and even deny basic facts surrounding January 6th.

"To ensure that such an attack never happens again, we have a responsibility to establish the truth of what happened on January 6th. While the House had a strong bipartisan vote to establish a 9/11-style commission, I am disappointed that Senate Republicans blocked this bill. However, I know that this bipartisan Select Committee will investigate the attack, follow the facts and report on its findings to the American people, free from partisanship or politics."
