Washington, D.C. -- Today, Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-CA), Chairwoman of the House Committee on Financial Services, issued the following statement regarding House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's announcement of her intent to form a select committee to investigate the January 6 insurrection at the Capitol.

"A select committee on the January 6 insurrection at the Capitol will help the American people get the answers we so desperately need and deserve. Not only is it necessary, but it will do what Republicans fear most. It will expose the truth about the January 6 insurrection, including what happened that day, who funded it, and who worked behind the scenes to orchestrate the events leading up to it.

"On January 6 we witnessed an attack on the Capitol that was carried out by the most brazen domestic terrorists in this country, including the Oath Keepers, the Proud Boys, the KKK, Q-Anon, and other white supremacists. They arrived at the Capitol under the orders of one person -- Donald J. Trump -- and with one mission: to overturn the 2020 election results. Throughout that day, we not only saw these domestic terrorists scaling the walls and breaking down the windows and doors of the United States Capitol Building, but we also saw them hang a noose on Capitol grounds and use the American flag as a weapon against law enforcement.

"In the final analysis, the events of January 6 are more than any real patriot can bear. All people who stand on the side of justice and democracy should support this important move by Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and I look forward to the select committee's necessary formation."
