WASHINGTON -- Today, Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-Los Angeles County) issued the following statement after reintroducing the Stop Waste And Misuse by the President Act of 2021, otherwise known as the SWAMP Act. This legislation compels individuals who are authorized for protection by the United States Secret Service under 18 USC 3056, including former presidents, to reimburse the American taxpayer for federal funds spent during the course of their protection at commercial properties that the individual owns or has a financial interest in.

"The Office of the President should never be used for personal gain or enrichment. That is why I am proud to reintroduce the SWAMP Act, which would prevent those who receive a Secret Service detail--including former presidents--to reimburse the Treasury Department for costs pertaining to trips to his or her own commercial properties. Congress has a strong role to play in protecting the American people from fraud and abuse and this bill is a key part of that effort."
