Press Release

Date: June 17, 2021
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congressman Steven Horsford joined his colleagues on the House Ways and Means Committee to hear testimony from Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen on the fiscal year 2022 budget for the U.S. Treasury. During the hearing, Congressman Horsford highlighted the value of low-income housing tax credits, and secured a commitment from Secretary Yellen to collaborate with his office on efforts to end food deserts.

"As Nevada's working families begin to rebuild from COVID-19, the federal government has a critical role to play in addressing the twin crises of housing affordability and food insecurity," said Congressman Steven Horsford. "During today's hearing, I was glad to hear from Secretary Yellen about the Treasury's proposal to create a pool of low-income housing tax credits to help families in need. I am looking forward to working with the Treasury Department to increase housing options in Nevada and expand healthy food options for all."

Housing affordability is an increasingly critical issue across Nevada, where home prices have skyrocketed in recent years. In January, the median cost of a house in Las Vegas reached $345,000, surpassing pre-2008 peaks. According to the Southern Nevada Home Builders Association, Nevada has a shortage of roughly 79,620 affordable units available to extremely low-income renters.
