Rep. Castro to Co-Chair Hispanic Serving Institutions Caucus

Press Release

Date: June 24, 2021
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Joaquin Castro (TX-20), member of the House Education and Labor Committee, will serve as the newest co-chair of the Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI) Caucus in the 117th Congress, alongside Representatives Raúl Grijalva (AZ-3), Mario Diaz-Balart (FL-25), and Jenniffer Gonzalez-Colon (Puerto Rico). The HSI Caucus aims to educate Members of Congress about the contributions of over 500 Hispanic-Serving Institutions in their districts and communities, and about the importance of allocating adequate resources for these institutions.

"For generations, Hispanic-Serving Institutions have enabled humble and hardworking people to pursue their dreams, but often with a fraction of the necessary funding," said Congressman Castro. "I'm working with my colleagues in Congress to ensure colleges and universities that serve predominantly Hispanic students in San Antonio and throughout the United States are allocated their fair share of resources so that our families and communities can thrive. COVID exacerbated the systemic inequities in education and investing in HSIs is a paramount priority to help young people attend college, get good-paying jobs, and build a fairer and stronger economy."

"Hispanic-Serving Institutions make a huge impact on the students they serve and are vital to communities across the nation. Federal investments in HSIs are essential to effectively preparing the workforce of our country," said HACU President and CEO Antonio R. Flores. "HACU is grateful to Congressman Joaquin Castro for his strong advocacy for HSIs everywhere, particularly for those in San Antonio, Texas, where our Association was founded 35 years ago; we are thankful for his willingness to co-chair the Congressional HSI Caucus," added Flores.
