Press Release

Date: July 2, 2021
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congressman David Schweikert (AZ-06) introduced the Uranium Seawater Extraction Research and Development Act, legislation to expand clean energy research and technology for the extraction of uranium from seawater to reduce the United States dependence on imported uranium, and create a sustainable alternative method for extraction.

"I am pleased to introduce legislation to promote technology that will allow for clean methods of extracting uranium from seawater. In the last several years, we have continued to see new technologies come to market that will create jobs, end our reliance on other countries for resources, and promote efficient, sustainable solutions for a cleaner environment. As we continue to work towards an all of the above approach to energy independence, it is important that we be promoting innovative, technology solutions to address our country's need for domestically-sourced critical minerals, while pioneering a clean, alternative method that, with further investment, can become a competitive process in the years to come."

Background:
The Uranium Seawater Extraction Research and Development Act would direct the Secretary of Energy to support research and development for extraction of uranium from seawater to reduce the dependence of the United States on imported uranium, illustrating that innovative technology for domestic extraction could be a more cost efficient and environmentally friendly alternative than traditional extraction methods.
