January 6th insurrection was a "direct assault on our democracy," says Rep. Bera
WASHINGTON, DC -- Representative Ami Bera, M.D. (D-CA) today released the following statement after voting to establish a Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol.

"January 6 was a dark day in our nation's history. The violent storming of the U.S. Capitol was a direct assault on our democracy, resulting in multiple deaths and over 140 law enforcement officers injured.

It was my hope that Democrats and Republicans would come together to create an independent, bipartisan 9/11-type Commission to investigate and report the facts and causes of the January 6 insurrection. Despite bipartisan support in the House of Representatives, Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans blocked the creation of an independent commission.

With today's vote, the House of Representatives is taking action to ensure we get down to the bottom of what happened on January 6, and to prevent an attack like this from ever happening again. The American people deserve a full, accurate, and bipartisan investigation into the January 6 insurrection."

The Select Committee, which will be comprised of 13 Members of Congress, will be charged with investigating and reporting on the facts, circumstances, and causes relating to the January 6 domestic terrorist attack on the U.S. Capitol Complex -- including the organization and execution of the attack, law enforcement and military preparation for and response to the attack, and other factors. Upon concluding the investigation, the Select Committee will issue a final report to Congress with findings, results, and legislative recommendations.
