Steube Urges President Biden to Crack Down on Cybercrime and Protect America's Food Supply Chain

U.S. Representative Greg Steube (R-Fla.) joined colleagues in sending a letter to President Biden regarding the recent cyberattack on JBS USA, North America's largest meatpacker by volume.

"The recent cyberattack on JBS USA shows just how damaging it can be if our country doesn't send a strong message to foreign governments who attack us via ransomware," Steube said. "Disruptions to our food supply chain are a national security risk as it puts our economy, health, and stability at risk. All nations who attempt to disrupt our supply chains need to be held accountable for their crimes."

In early June, computer networks at JBS were hacked, temporarily shutting down some operations in Australia, Canada, and the U.S. The company is an exclusive supplier to countless consumer brands, supermarket chains, and food service providers on a national scale and contracts production with thousands of farms across the country.

There have been several cyberattacks against the United States since President Biden took office, including the hacking of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). Though Russia denies the cyberattack, there are also suspicions over whether the Russian government also knew about the ransomware attack on the Colonial Pipeline earlier this year. Steube previously criticized President Biden for his response to the Colonial Pipeline attack.
