Murphy Statement on Saudi Arabia's Release of Prominent Women's Rights Activists

U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), Chairman of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Near East, South Asia, Central Asia, and Counterterrorism, on Monday released the following statement on Saudi Arabia's release of prominent women's rights activists:

"It's good news that Saudi Arabia is releasing these prominent women's rights activists--who should never have been imprisoned in the first place--and I'll be watching closely to ensure the terms of their release do not include travel bans or other such restrictions. There are far too many political prisoners in Saudi Arabia, and the Kingdom should release others who are wrongfully detained for exercising their fundamental rights," said Murphy.

Last year, Murphy, along with eight other senators from both sides of the aisle, demanded the immediate release of women political prisoners who remain unjustly detained in Saudi Arabia.
