DeLauro Statement on Senate Failure to Advance Paycheck Fairness Act

House Appropriations Committee Chair Rosa DeLauro (D-CT-03) issued the following statement on today's Senate vote on the Paycheck Fairness Act, legislation to ensure women receive equal pay for equal work:

"Tonight's Senate vote on the Paycheck Fairness Act should not have been a partisan vote but rather a vote of conscience. Congress passed the Equal Pay Act nearly 60 years ago, and still, women are paid less on average than their male counterparts--the gap is highest for women of color. Continuing to shortchange working women undercuts their ability not only to recover from the pandemic, but also to build financial security for themselves, their families, and their communities over their careers.

"In his Joint Address to Congress, President Biden called on us to send this critical legislation to his desk to be signed into law. Strengthening equal pay laws has the overwhelming support of voters across political affiliation. The House passed this legislation for the fourth time in April, yet Senate Republicans again have failed to listen to the desire of their constituents and grant women this basic right: equal pay for equal work."
