Press Release

Date: June 17, 2021
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Rep. John B. Larson (CT-01) voted to repeal the 2002 Authorization of Use of Military Force (AUMF), which authorized the war in Iraq. Larson opposed the AUMF in 2002 and has been working to repeal it since then.

"Informed by the historical perspective of the Vietnam War, in 2002 I voted against the Authorization of Use of Military Force. This authorization was approved on a false premise and was overly broad. It's been nearly two decades since it was first approved. It is Congress's constitutional responsibility to authorize war. By failing to repeal this authorization over the past 19 years, Congress has shirked its constitutional duty. It's time for Congress to finally reclaim its constitutional responsibility and I was proud to vote again to repeal this authorization," said Larson.

In the 116th Congress, the House voted twice on bipartisan basis to pass identical language to end the 2002 AUMF. Larson voted against the Iraq War and has called for the repeal of the 2001 and 2002 AUMFs. Larson is a cosponsor of Rep. Barbara Lee's bills to repeal the 2002 AUMF (HR 256) and the 2001 AUMF (HR 255).
