Rep. Boebert Votes to Commemorate Juneteenth

Press Release

Date: June 17, 2021
Location: Washington, DC

Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Co.) voted in favor of the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act (S. 475), because she supports recognizing and celebrating the end of slavery in America.

Rep. Boebert stated: "Juneteenth is a day for all of us to celebrate American freedom and commemorate the end of slavery. America has a proud history of correcting her mistakes and working for justice. This is something all Americans should embrace and support."

Background:

The Senate passed S. 475, the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act on June 15, 2021 by unanimous consent. The House voted on the bill on June 16, 2021, and it passed by a vote of 415-14.

While Rep. Boebert cast her vote in favor of the bill, it was not without concern for the lack of regular order during the bill's consideration.

The House of Representatives took up the bill with little notice, without a hearing, and without the opportunity for amendments. This has become the practice in Nancy Pelosi's regime. Had the bill been considered under regular order, the House would have been able to consider other issues of concern to some Members. For example, the costs of granting the federal workforce another day off work as well as the proposed title of the Holiday, both of which might have been addressed had the bill moved through regular order and received a hearing and a markup. For example, previous estimates from the Obama administration found an extra holiday will cost taxpayers $660 million in payroll and holiday premium costs in 2014.
