Washington, DC -- Today, Congressman Filemon Vela (D-TX) and Congressman Don Bacon (R-NE) announced the reintroduction of the Coast Guard Combat-Injured Tax Fairness Act. The bipartisan legislation amends the Combat-Injured Veterans Tax Fairness Act of 2016 to allow members of the Coast Guard to file claims for credit or refund for taxes improperly withheld from disability severance pay. The legislation was initially introduced by Congressman Vela during the 116th Congress.

"The U.S. Coast Guard operates continuously in both sea and air putting their health and well-being in jeopardy for the safety of Americans," said Congressman Filemon Vela. "These unsung heroes deserve our full support and care, and deserve to be refunded for taxes incorrectly collected on pay they rightfully earned."

"The U.S. Coast Guard is our nation's front line maritime security, search and rescue and law enforcement branch of our military forces," said Rep. Bacon. "It is only right that Coast Guard members and veterans receive the tax benefits that Congress intended all of the military branches to receive. As the co-leads of the Coast Guard Combat-Injured Tax Fairness Act, Rep. Vela and I are committed to supporting America's heroes and showing our gratitude toward our servicemen and women by alleviating this unfair tax burden."
