Congressman Sires Statement on the Senate Failing to Pass January 6th Commission

Press Release

Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congressman Albio Sires (D-NJ) issued a statement after Republicans in the Senate blocked legislation to create a January 6th Commission:

"Today, a majority of Republicans in the Senate, led by Senate Minority Leader McConnell, chose to bury the facts by rejecting the January 6th Commission. On January 6th, rioters attempted to overthrow the results of the 2020 presidential election by attacking the Capitol Building, as well as the Capitol Police Officers who were tasked with protecting the very people who now deny the violence. My colleagues and I, on both sides of the aisle, lived through it and we have all seen the footage showing the destruction and violence on behalf of rioters who clearly announced their intentions that day. A commission is necessary in order to understand security failures, the delayed response from the Department of Defense, and the culpability of politicians who encouraged rioters. To truly learn from these events and protect against future threats, a commission to investigate the January 6th attack is essential.

"The decision by many Republicans in the Senate to reject an independent investigation, and to deny the facts of what happened on January 6th, is an attempt to erase and reshape history. The January 6th attack should be remembered as one of the darkest days in American history, and it should be a wakeup call for us all to focus on rooting out disinformation which can incite violence. In order to do so, we need complete and accurate information on the motives and actions of all those involved in the attack. Senate Minority Leader McConnell has tried to deny our nation that opportunity, but it is important that we continue to pursue the truth."
