Date: May 20, 2021
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: K-12 Education

U.S. Representative Charlie Crist (D-St. Petersburg) announced the re-introduction of the Civics Learning Act of 2021, legislation previously championed by the late Rep. Alcee Hastings to increase civic engagement and learning for America's youth.
Specifically, the Civic Learning Act of 2021 would make up to $30 million available to improve elementary, middle, and high school civic engagement curriculums, boosting knowledge, interest, and involvement in American civic life. Studies in recent years have showed concerningly low levels of knowledge in adults about basic components of civic learning, highlighting the need to invest in civics. This legislation also prioritizes geographic diversity, so all American youth can benefit.

"My dear friend, the late Rep. Alcee Hastings, was a fiercely passionate advocate for America's youth, working to empower the next generation of great American leaders through education, advancement, and civic engagement," said Rep. Crist. "Though he may no longer be with us, his legacy remains -- and I'm proud to carry it onward by re-introducing his Civics Learning Act. He knew the truth that America is strongest when our people understand and can participate in our democracy, and with this effort, we'll do just that."

"IGNITE believes that our democracy is stronger when the voices of our citizens--especially the youth--are uplifted and amplified," said IGNITE National Policy Manager Jocelyn Yow. "We are proud to support innovative and evidence-based civics education programs in K-12 curriculum to empower our youth."

The late Congressman Hastings introduced the Civics Learning Act in the 116th and 117th Congresses before his passing in April 2021.
