Spanberger Statement on President Biden's Executive Order Banning U.S. Investments in Huawei, Other Companies Tied to Chinese Military

U.S. Representative Abigail Spanberger today released the following statement after President Joe Biden signed an executive order blacklisting U.S. investments in several firms tied to the Chinese military -- including Huawei.

"Americans should not be directly or indirectly supporting the Chinese military and the Chinese Communist Party's repressive surveillance. Today's executive order from the Biden Administration demonstrates strategic national security leadership -- and it makes clear that we take China's aggressive actions and its human rights abuses against its own people very seriously," said Spanberger. "As a former CIA case officer, I am particularly concerned about Huawei's coordination with the Chinese military and Chinese intelligence services. That's why I am encouraged to see President Biden recognize the interconnected threats to our national security and our economy that U.S. investments in companies like Huawei pose. In response to these threats, I have long advocated for strengthening our nation's telecommunications networks, because we cannot afford to jeopardize the online security of American businesses, families, and government agencies. I look forward to working with this administration to keep building up our resilience and competitiveness here at home -- an investment worth pursuing for the long haul."

Last year, President Donald Trump signed into law Spanberger's bipartisan legislation requiring a national strategy to protect American 5G telecommunications systems from foreign-based threats, like those from Huawei and ZTE.
