Rep. Chu Statement on the One Year Anniversary of George Floyd's Murder

Today, Rep. Judy Chu (CA-27) issued the following statement on the one-year anniversary of the murder of George Floyd:

"I stand with the Black community and all Americans in remembering the inexcusable murder of George Floyd. Sadly, Mr. Floyd was just one of far too many Black lives murdered by police, but his murder created a movement that forever changed the world. And even though former Minneapolis police officer, Derek Chavin, was found guilty of murder, the conviction alone is not justice. True justice will only happen when we put an end to police violence and address system racism and bias in our law enforcement and justice system.

"Following the murder of Mr. Floyd, I stood with our colleagues in the Congressional Black Caucus as Chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus and demanded change. And we were not alone. Across the country, peaceful protesters took to the streets demanding action to curb police brutality and ensure greater accountability. That is why the House voted to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act last summer, and then again at the start of this new Congress. This House-passed bill helps to stem police brutality by banning chokeholds and "no-knock' search warrants at the federal level and incentivize states to do the same. Furthermore, the bill aims to end qualified immunity and will create a national database of police misconduct so that police are accountable to the same laws they uphold.

"No family should have to experience such a preventable loss. Since Mr. Floyd's passing, many more families have unfortunately experienced traumas at the hands of law enforcement, and I mourn with all of them. Black and brown lives are still being disproportionately targeted, and many officers who commit violence against innocent people are not being held accountable. We cannot allow such brutality on our fellow Americans continue. The Senate must follow the House's lead and pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act so President Biden can sign it into law!"
