In Senate Hearing, Sinema Discusses Housing Affordability in Arizona

WASHINGTON -- Arizona senior Senator Kyrsten Sinema spoke today in a Senate Banking Committee hearing about Arizona's competitive housing market and questioned Housing and Urban Development Secretary Marcia Fudge about housing affordability solutions as demand increases.

"The state of the housing market in Arizona is particularly challenging right now…It is becoming too expensive to buy a home in Arizona. This has real implications for Arizona families. Delaying homeownership makes it harder for families to build long-term wealth, and it can force changes to other major life events, like taking a new job, getting married, or starting a family," said Sinema.

In the hearing, Sinema asked Secretary Fudge about how to tackle housing shortages and possible bipartisan solutions to address the rise of seniors experiencing homelessness in Arizona.

Sinema recently cosponsored the Affordable Housing Credit Improvement Act--bipartisan legislation that strengthens the Low Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) to fuel investment in affordable housing for Arizona communities. Sinema also worked closely with Senators Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) and Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) on developing the bipartisan Emergency Family Stabilization Act and successfully getting a version of the bill implemented as part of the latest coronavirus-relief package, the American Rescue Plan. Sinema's bipartisan legislation created an $800 million fund to increase resources and housing for Arizona children and youth experiencing homelessness.
