Location: Washington, DC

WASHINGTON -- Today, U.S. Representative Kathleen Rice (NY-04) voted in support of H.R. 3233, the National Commission to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol Complex Act. The bill passed the House of Representatives by vote of 252 to 175. Rice's remarks on the House Floor in support of the legislation can be found here.

"On January 6th, an armed mob of insurrectionists stormed the Capitol intending to murder the Speaker, the Vice President and Members of Congress," said Rep. Kathleen Rice. "We cannot pretend this didn't happen or let those on the other side of the aisle whitewash the events of that day. I was proud to vote for the creation of bipartisan commission which will issue a full report on the facts of January 6th and provide recommendations to prevent future attacks on our democracy. I thank Chairman Bennie Thompson and Ranking Member John Katko for negotiating this bill in good faith."

H.R. 3233 will establish an independent, bipartisan 9/11-type commission to examine and report upon the facts, causes and security relating to the terrorist mob attack on the United States Capitol on January 6th, 2021. The Commission would also be charged with making recommendations to prevent future attacks on our democracy.

The Commission will have ten members: five members, including the Chair, appointed by the Speaker of the House and Majority Leader of the Senate; and five, including the Vice Chair, appointed by the Minority Leaders of the House and Senate. Commissioners must be experts in law enforcement, civil rights and liberties, law, intelligence or cybersecurity and will be tasked with investigating the facts of the January 6th attack, including the insurrectionists' operations and motivations as well as the response by local law enforcement and intelligence agencies.
