Larson: Republicans Can't Pretend Jan. 6th Didn't Happen By Refusing to Vote

Statement

Location: Washington, DC

Today, Rep. John B. Larson (CT-01) voted for H.R.3233, the National Commission to Investigate the January 6 Attack on the United States Capitol Complex Act, and blasted Republicans who opposed it:

"Republicans are in denial over what the American people saw with their own eyes. Five people died during the insurrection, including U.S. Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick. People were assaulted, Members and staff had to hide as gun shots were fired in the Capitol. By choosing to oppose the Commission we voted to create today, Republican leadership is trying to erase and deny what happened that day. They fear the truth will come out on what role their party and the President had in the attack on our Capitol. I applaud Rep. John Katko, Liz Cheney, and the other Republicans who are doing the right thing and supporting the creation of this commission.

"The problem in the Senate is that its elected Republican leadership won't fulfill their basic duty to vote. For Mitch McConnell to say that he will use the filibuster rule to stop the vote is exactly what Americans dislike about government. Members of Congress take an oath to the Constitution and have the responsibility to vote. Either you're for or against it, but fulfill your oath of office and vote. Your constituents deserve to know where you stand. We owe this to the American people -- the least the Senate can do is vote."
