Congresswoman Johnson Statement On Passage Of Legislation Establishing January 6 Commission

Statement

Today, Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson (TX-30) voted for H.R. 3233, legislation to establish an independent, bipartisan, 9/11-type commission to examine and report upon the facts, causes, and security relating to the attack on the United States Capitol on January 6th, 2021.

"Just four months ago, the nation stood still as the Capitol of the United States--the very beacon of our democracy--was attacked by a violent and armed mob of insurrectionists," said Congresswoman Johnson. "January 6th will be remembered as one of the darkest days in the history of our nation and of democracies everywhere.

"The halls of the Capitol remain littered with remnants of the attack. Shattered glass panes, broken furniture, and missing statues continue to haunt the once-pristine building--none of which compare to the trauma and fear still lingering in the minds of Members, aides, press, and support staff alike," continued Congresswoman Johnson. "It is now our responsibility to come together, not as Democrats or Republicans, but as Americans, in the pursuit of truth, justice, and accountability. That is why the establishment of this bipartisan commission is necessary, and why I was proud to vote in its favor."

The Commission will have ten members: five members, including the Chair, appointed by the Speaker of the House and Majority Leader of the Senate; and five, including the Vice Chair, appointed by the Minority Leaders of the House and Senate. Commissioners must be experts in law enforcement, civil rights and liberties, law, intelligence or cybersecurity and will be tasked with investigating the facts of the January 6th attack, including the insurrectionists' operations and motivations as well as the response by local law enforcement and intelligence agencies.
